We all know that change is not easy. In his ground-breaking article, “Change or Die”, Alan Deutchman (Fast Company Magazine, Dec 19, 2007) reports that heart patients who are told that if they don’t change their current lifestyle–smoking, overeating, no exercise, etc., they will die. So what enables people to make changes in any area of their lives that will improve their overall wellbeing and ability to live a life that they love and live it well? It’s a simple formula; it’s just not easy to do alone:
- Self awareness: What are my values and purpose?
- Vision: What is my vision of a live that I love?
- Action: What consistent short term choices will make my vision a reality?
According to Tom Rath and Jim Harter in Gallup’s book, Wellbeing, The Five Essential Elements, if we develop awareness and a long-term vision (which is a big “‘if”), we fail to consistently make the minute-by-minute choices necessary to support our vision. We just don’t have the willpower to unfreeze our current bad habits and form habits that enable us to move from struggling to thriving.
